ATOEM - Autonomous Transient Ocean Event Monitoring

The ATOEM (Autonomous Transient Ocean Event Monitoring) platform is a fully autonomous, diesel-electric submarine “mothership” capable of launch, recovery and support of a contingent of smaller AUVs. Global deployment of a large fleet of modular, low-cost, highly manufacturable ATOEM platforms has the potential to transform oceanographic research by providing coordinated, comprehensive, time-series, spatiotemporal measurements of all key ocean properties on an unprecedented scale, while exploiting increasing levels of Science Autonomy. ATOEM is the critical platform needed to study and understand the detailed inner workings of both natural phytoplankton blooms and those induced by deliberate fertiliztion.
