About
As its name implies, Seaquester's primary goal is to evaluate the feasibility of sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere in the deep ocean through controlled fertilization of appropriate surface waters with trace elements like iron to stimulate specific types of phytoplankton blooms that will subsequently rapidly transport fixed carbon to depths where it will be isolated for hundred to thousands of years. This is not a novel concept, but we believe that both the science and technology are currently lacking to properly evaluate the opportunity and have thus created a new research and development organization to fill these critical gaps. Even if carbon seaquestration ultimately proves to be unfeasible for any of a host of possible reasons, we hope to significantly advance our understanding of the underlying ocean biogeochemical processes and the workings of the "biological pump". We also intend to explore the potential for restoring rapidly diminishing open ocean seafood stocks through the same type of ocean fertilization to lay the foundation for "farming" the open sea. At a minimum, we would hope to deliver a completely novel technical capability for oceanographic research broadly through the evolution of our Autonomous Transient Ocean Event Monitoring platform, ATOEM.
